Additional Details

A beautifully composed scene depicting a planned underground railway designed to alleviate the congestion of lower Broadway, already becoming problematic in the late 19th century. Construction for the project was authorized in April 1870, however it was vetoed by Governor John Thompson Hoffman and production continued to be shelved throughout the 1880's. This is a fascinating view of an unbuilt predecessor to New York's modern day subway system. A scarce print, this being only the second to appear at auction in recent record.
